Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Ultra Portable External Hard Drive review

This new WD drive is fantastic in that it is quite small that it can fit in your pocket. , doesn’t require external power, and it is quite good looking. It is amazing how they fit 1 TB drive in such a small package. One bonus is that when I replace my computer in future with one that has USB 3.0 interface, this drive can handle that. (It works fine with USB 2.0 also.) The device looked and felt solid.

You can just plug it into a USB port and the work’s done.

I transferred over 300 pictures right away, lightning fast and it didn’t even make a dent on the space available. 2GB file now can write to this drive in 33 seconds – nearly 500 Mbps or about 62 MB/s. When connected to a USB 3.0 port, this drive lets you access and save files up to 3 times faster than a USB 2.0 port would. A 2-hour HD movie takes just 5 minutes instead of 13 minutes depending on the user’s hardware and configuration. It has 5-star performance, but a bonus is that it looks 5-star too. Very compact, stylish ,lightweight and runs nearly silently.

One minor gripe about this device: the included data cable is *very* short (about a foot long), limiting drive placement options (I don’t know if this is related to the USB 3 capability or not).
